It took me a while to come up with the theme for my May 2021 bullet journal design. Nothing seemed to speak to my spirit as I searched high and low for a spark of inspiration. After a long search, I finally stumbled upon a drawing of outer space that piqued my interest.
At first, I didn’t want to commit to the outer space theme. So, I kept searching for something else, but nothing seemed to capture my attention. I finally decided to go with the outer space theme since it was already the first week of May and I didn’t have my bullet journal set up for the month.
I’m glad I finally committed to the space theme. Take a look at my outer space theme and design process below.
The Design Process
The Cover Pages
Once I committed to my outer space theme, I created a board on Pinterest solely dedicated to space drawings and doodles. I saved a bunch of ideas to this board in order to have as many examples as possible to choose from. I gazed at a lot of drawings for what seemed like an eternity. Ultimately, I decided to draw a picture of a spaceship blasting off surrounded by clouds for the May cover page.

For the notes and things to do page, I drew pictures of other space objects such as an alien spaceship, planets, and stars. I settled on a color scheme of bright pink, blue, and yellow in order to create a sense of symmetry and cohesion. I think the end result is quite playful and eye catching.
The Calendar
The calendar page seemed to be the easiest page to design because I had already seen a picture that seemed to be the perfect idea for this spread. I chose to draw a variety of stars, space rocks, planets, and moons hanging from the top edge of the pages.
In the bottom right corner, I added a simple drawing of an astronaut floating in space. I based the picture on a simple tutorial I found on Pinterest. The picture was really easy to draw. Even though the original drawing had a face peering through the helmet, I chose to black out the helmet instead.

My color scheme for the calendar page was softer than the cover pages. I chose lavender, pink, and blue to complete the page. I think the final product is simply adorable.
The Mood and Productivity Trackers
The mood tracker for this theme was also an easy design to create because I had found a bunch of mood tracker ideas that fit perfectly into this theme. All I had to do was pick the one that spoke to me the most. As you can see from the picture below, I decided to draw a bunch of planets of different sizes and patterns centered around a sun. I then numbered each planet from 1-31 to represent each day in the month of May. Finally, I chose the colors for the key and wrote the title in a simple font across the top of the page.

The productivity tracker page was a little more difficult to complete. I had a hard time choosing the colors and space objects that I wanted in the design. I finally settled on drawing things like a satellite and spaceship hovering over the surface of a moon.
On the surface, I drew a satellite dish and a small rover moving along the bumpy terrain. The colors are a combination of bright and soft. Even though this isn’t my favorite page of the month, I think it turned out okay in the end.
The Weekly Spreads
My weekly spreads were created using moons, planets, and stars. The first two pages contain drawings of crescent moons surrounded by stars. I chose the colors blue and yellow to tie the pages together.

The last two pages have drawings of planets surrounded by stars. I used the colors pink and purple to complete the design.

This theme took a lot of hard work and forced me to stretch my skills creatively. In the end, I’m very pleased with the finished product. I’m just glad that I was able to come up with a theme and have a lovely spread to use the entire month.
